WORK ON KROBO UNIVERSITY PROJECT PROGRESSES

How the flagship block will look like on completion
Some of the buildings in their advanced stages of construction
Construction work on the University College of Public Health at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region is in top gear way ahead of the project timeline with huge and modern style storey buildings dotted all over the site three months after the start of the project.

The writer at the site
At the time of the visit, about five complex storey buildings, most of them on their third floors made up of the administration block, students dormitory, apartments for faculties and staff, conference/ICT centers as well as kitchen/dining were all at their advanced stages of bricks work. A single story bungalow for the dean had also gone beyond the lintel level with two new additions- a book shop and sick bay- at their foundation stages.

Mapping for the construction of paved drive ways and recreational facilities including a cafeteria, swimming pool, tennis, volleyball and baseball courts as well as car parks was also all underway.

The first of its kind in the Krobo area, Ensign College of Public Health- as it would be called- which is expected to take off with its first batch in September next year, is a brainchild of Dr. Kwesi Dugbatey, a retired international Aviation Medical Specialist and would offer post graduate courses in Environmental / Occupational Health, Health Policy, Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Behavioural Science & Health Management among others.
The project is being supported by the University of Utah, a public, coeducational research university in Salt Lake City, United States.

Situated at the bank of the Volta Lake along the Akosombo-Tema highway, less than a minute drive from the Kpong, the college would zoom into action with postgraduate (second degree) courses to be followed shortly with doctorate and subsequently undergraduate (first degree) courses. There would also, in the long term, be an addition of a modern hospital to the facilities on campus to readily serve as practical training ground for the students.

Dr. Dugbatey said, “The project is my contribution to the land of my birth and I'm happy with the progress made. All things being equal, we will comfortably meet the deadline because we are way ahead of the project timelines”.

Mr. Richard Akrong, the project co-coordinator of Rhema Alma Construction work- the company undertaking the construction said, “We have two more buildings to add at this phase of the construction including a staff and student apartment but all of these have been factored into the fifteen months project timetable. We hope to hand over the project by April next year, three months before take-off, fully furnished”.
