STREET NAMING IN LOWER MANYA KROBO ENTERS PILOT PHASE

The pilot phase of the street naming exercise in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality has taken off as earlier indicated by the MCE, Hon. Frederick Acolatse when the leadership of Kloma Gbi called on him in his office on October 3, 2014.

The mounting of signage is presently ongoing in parts of town including areas like Kpongunor, Abanse, and Agromanya. Kloma Gbi has spotted some of the signage and can confirm that the exercise is in full flight.

You will recall that the President, John Dramani Mahama, directed the 170 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to name all the streets and address every property under their jurisdictions within 18 months. The ultimatum elapsed on September 30, 2014 but the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality missed out on the PRESIDENTIAL DEADLINE because for nearly 4 years, (among other issues) the municipality was without ASSEMBLY MEMBERS (and the various sub-committees) to take and implement the needed decisions to bring the exercise to fruition.  That is most unfortunate, you will say, but this is JUST one of the MANY ways the municipality (and the people) suffered because of the NEEDLESS BOUNDARY DISPUTE OVER AKUSE (NATRIKU) and the chain of costly legal battles that characterised it.

We find this action on the part of the new MCE swift (taking cognizance of the fact that he assumed office just a few months ago) and wish to commend him and his team who are working to speed up the project.

We want to advice however that wider consultation is done to inform the choice of names for the various streets. We have seen a few names that are clearly not FITTING for the roads they have been assigned to because (among others) those streets long had names that have become popular over the years and on the lips of the indigene.

Putting our ears on the ground, sentiment even indicate that the decision to change those OLD (and famous) names was not a popular one for which reason the people may not even want to use the new names (even if they don’t aggressively kick against it in the open).

The end result is that the old names may still override the new ones and will literally defeat the essence of the exercise, making the signage WHITE ELEPHANTS.
You are making progress, Hon MCE but let’s do further (broader) consultation.
